After a close 86-89 win on Friday night, the Las Vegas Aces lead the WNBA Finals 1-0 over the Phoenix Mercury as they are on the hunt for the second win of the finals on their home floor.
This is the first WNBA Finals series in league history to be set at the best-of-seven series.
The Aces retain home court advantage by playing game 2 at home and if necessary, games 5 and 7 at home.
The Aces are 8-2 in a series that is at least 3 games when it has won game 1.
Las Vegas has been averaging 87.2 points per game. The Aces follow that with 45.8% shooting from the floor, which is slightly below their 48.2% shooting average in the playoffs.
The Aces will continue to rely on their trio of Wilson, Young, Gray and their bench. MVP A’ja Wilson had made league history with every passing game. She is averaging double-doubles in almost every game. In game 1, Wilson recorded her 24th playoff double-double.
Jackie Young and Chelsea Gray have combined for 5 of 20 from the floor and 1 of 10 from beyond the three-point line but have recorded 15 assists collectively in the game one win.
Aces guard Dana Evans continued to be the spark that she’s been all season long. Evans made WNBA history in game 1 being the first player ever to record 5 three-pointers and 4 steals in a WNBA finals series. Evans closed the game out scoring a career-high 21 points.
The Aces will continue their defensive strategy of containing Phoenix’s big three in Alyssa Thomas, Satou Sabally, and Kahleah Copper. Copper scored 14 points in the first half, but the Aces thwarted her efforts in the second half, limiting her to only 2 points.
Games 3 and 4 will be played on the road in Phoenix. Game 3 will be played on Wednesday, October 8 and game 4 will be played Friday, October 10. Both games will be played on ESPN at 5pm PT.
