The Las Vegas Aces (26-14) continued to hunt for the twelfth straight win against the Atlanta Dream (24-14) after clinching a spot in the playoffs.
In the first quarter, the Aces got off to a slow start against the Dream, but A’ja Wilson and Jackie Young kept the Aces in stride with the Atlanta.
With 3:58 remaining in the first quarter, Atlanta took a 13-11 lead over the Aces. At the end of the first quarter, Atlanta was shooting 53% from the field.
The Dream led the Aces 30-24 at the 6:37 mark of the second quarter. Atlanta shot 11% from the floor in the second quarter. The Aces were trying to pick up some momentum to close out the first half.
Both teams struggled from behind the arc. To start the third quarter, the Aces tied the game 42-42. The Aces tried to gain some footing in the third quarter.
Chelsea Gray came up with a big for the Aces with a big three-pointer and drawing the foul behind the three-point line giving the Aces a 46-44 lead. In the third quarter, Gray made the 400th three-pointer of her career.
The Aces went on a 10-0 run including a pair of A’ja Wilson hit back-to-back three-pointers to lift the Aces to a 54-48 lead with 2:29 remaining in the third quarter.
Las Vegas outscored Atlanta 21-6 the third quarter alone. To close out the quarter the Aces led the Dream 61-48.
Atlanta began a comeback in the fourth quarter to gain the momentum behind Rhyne Howard with under 3:00 minutes remaining in the game.
Jewell Loyd and Chelsea Gray hit a pair of outside shots to propel the Aces to the win in the final seconds of the game.
The Aces have claimed their twelfth straight win to tie a franchise record, first set by the San Antonio Stars in 2012 with an 81-75 win over Atlanta. They also claim the No. 2 seed in the playoffs.
This was A’ja Wilson’s 22nd 20+ scoring game, she finished the game with 32 points.
Jackie Young earned her second triple-double of the season scoring 10 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists.
“This team is etching out their presence. Their making their presence felt,” Aces coach Becky Hammon said about the Aces win streak.
The Aces will meet the Minnesota Lynx on Thursday, September 4 in a rematch at the T-Mobile Arena at 7pm PT. The Aces haven’t lost a game since losing by 53 to Minnesota on August 2.
