Phoenix Mercury star Alyssa Thomas is putting the WNBA on blast for not protecting her or her teammates.
Thomas was at the center of a controversial no-call last Wednesday when she hit Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark in the throat. The WNBA reviewed this incident and decided to issue a one-game suspension to Thomas.
“Upon postgame review, the Phoenix Mercury’s Alyssa Thomas has received a Flagrant Foul 2 penalty and a one-game suspension for recklessly making contact with her fist to the throat area of Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark,” the league said. “Per WNBA rule, the League Office has the option, following its review of any game, to reclassify a Flagrant foul or to classify as Flagrant any foul not called as such during a game and may impose a fine and/or suspension.”
While speaking to the media this Tuesday afternoon, Thomas said her flagrant foul on Clark was an accident. She also said she received death threats from several WNBA fans after this incident took place.
"I’m crazy, you know, the playing the game, being suspended, just the whole narrative that’s being painted out there. It’s unfortunate that it’s come to this over basketball. A lot of us, myself included, didn’t even know the play took place until after, you know, the game," Thomas said. "And, you know, now we’re being painted as thugs, and there’s death threats out on us. So it’s really unacceptable. It’s something that needs to change in this league."
Thomas then took aim at WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert for staying silent during this entire situation.
"We still have yet to hear anything from Cathy," Thomas continued. "You can see what's being said ... As usual, she remains silent, and that's unfortunate when our lives are being threatened."
"I didn't even know I was being suspended until 10 minutes before it was all over social media."

Dan Patrick recently put the WNBA on blast for not having a spokesperson ready to address the scuffle involving Clark and Thomas.
“Just a note to the WNBA, have somebody available,” Patrick said. “Yesterday, we’re one of the few outlets that called looking for a quote. We couldn’t even get a quote out of anybody. And Paulie was working on that most of the show. Like, have somebody available, alright? You have to answer tough questions sometimes. And this is a time when you have to answer a tough question. But have somebody available. That’s all. Have somebody available for comment. Everybody was traveling; nobody was available yesterday. And then it spirals out of control, and it gets even worse. And then everybody’s got an opinion about this. Even people who probably didn’t see the game.”
Bill Simmons of The Ringer, on the other hand, said the WNBA needs a "competent commissioner" as soon as possible.
