On Sunday, the WNBA announced that it was investigating reports of hateful comments directed towards the Chicago Sky's Angel Reese during their season opener against the Indiana Fever on Saturday.

"The WNBA strongly condemns racism, hate, and discrimination in all forms -- they have no place in our league or in society," the league said in a statement. "We are aware of the allegations and are looking into the matter."

Saturday's game was defined by a hard foul from Caitlin Clark across Reese's arm, which jarred the ball loose and knocked Reese to the floor with a little over four and a half minutes left in the third quarter. When Reese jumped up to confront Clark, forward Aliyah Boston stepped between the two players as Clark walked away.

“We are working closely with the WNBA to complete their investigation,” Mel Raines, the owner of the Fever and CEO of Pacers Sports & Entertainment, said in the statement. “We stand firm in our commitment to providing a safe environment for all WNBA players.”

The Chicago Sky President and CEO, Adam Fox, later announced that the team is welcoming the WNBA's investigation of the fan misconduct and "will do everything in our power to protect Chicago Sky players, and we encourage the league to continue taking meaningful steps to create a safe environment for all WNBA players."

In a recent press conference on Tuesday, Reese finally spoke out about the incident for the first time. She only took three questions about the incident before a Sky media rep responded "next question" when reporters asked follow-ups.

"Obviously, there’s no place in our league for that. I think the WNBA and our team have done a great job supporting me and I've had communication from everyone," the 23-year-old athlete responded. "Going through this process, obviously, if it can happen to me, it can happen to anyone, and I think they’ve done a great job supporting us in this."

Even though those remarks are hard to hear and having an ongoing investigation during the season, Reese really emphasized how loved and supported she feels, both from her team and her fans.

"Obviously, it's tough. But, I have a great support system and I'm loved by so many people," the LSU alum said. "In the moment, it's hard to hear, but my support system is great. God has protected me in so many ways."
