Angel Reese's New Teammate Addresses Liberty Departure

Courtney Vandersloot’s time with the New York Liberty has ended, and the veteran guard is heading back to familiar territory. After two seasons in New York, Vandersloot—who helped lead the Liberty to back-to-back WNBA Finals appearances and their first-ever championship in 2024—has returned to the Chicago Sky for the 2025 season.

The move reunites her with the franchise where she spent the first 12 years of her career, but it also raised questions about her sudden departure from New York. Now, Vandersloot, Angel Reese’s new teammate in Chicago, is setting the record straight.

“We decided at the end that it was time for me to move on,” Vandersloot said during an Unrivaled press conference Thursday, according to Moreau Sports Media. “We have had conversations, and I was looking for something that they couldn’t give me. There’s nothing more to it. Like I said, it was a great relationship. We still have a good relationship. We didn’t leave on bad terms.”

Though Vandersloot played a key role in the Liberty’s success, her impact diminished during the 2024 playoffs when she was relegated to a bench role.

With her playing time and production dipping—averaging just 22.3 minutes and 6.4 points per game, both career lows—she hit free agency and chose to return to Chicago.

For the Sky, bringing Vandersloot back is a major win, particularly for Reese, who will benefit from her veteran leadership.

Now back in Chicago, Vandersloot is ready to embrace her next chapter—this time alongside one of the WNBA’s rising stars.
