In a recent episode of her podcast "Unapologetically Angel," WNBA star Angel Reese opened up about her feelings regarding the exit of coach Teresa Weatherspoon, the Chicago Sky's former head coach.
Weatherspoon was let go by the team in September after just one season in the role.
Seattle Storm guard Skylar Diggins-Smith, who appeared as a guest in the latest episode of Reese's podcast, brought up Weatherspoon's exit during their conversation. She asked Reese how she felt about the coach leaving the Sky.
"I was so heartbroken," Reese responded candidly.
Diggins-Smith, who agreed with Reese on the importance of relationships in basketball, also asked her about what Reese loved most about Weatherspoon.
Reese emphasized that her bond with the coach was rooted in mutual understanding.
"She understood me," Reese said.
"I'm big on relationships and she knew what was best for me and the team."
Under Weatherspoon's guidance, Reese became the WNBA's leading rebounder for the 2024 season. Despite the individual success, the Sky struggled overall, finishing with a 13-27 record and failing to make the playoffs.
Even though Weatherspoon's tenure was marked by challenges, Reese spoke highly of her former coach's contributions.
"She was the only person that believed in me," Reese wrote on X following Weatherspoon's firing.
"You were the best reason & season. You didn’t deserve this but I can’t thank you enough. I love you Tspoon."
Reese's statement indicates how Weatherspoon had impacted her and the Sky during her tenure as the head coach.
