Another Caitlin Clark first with Dick’s, Foot Locker deal
USA Today Sports

Caitlin Clark has added another first to a career already full of them. The Indiana Fever guard has signed a multiyear partnership with Dick’s Sporting Goods and Foot Locker, becoming the first individual athlete either retailer has ever signed as a brand partner. No man or woman had held that distinction with either company before.

The agreement puts one of basketball’s most recognizable faces at the center of two of the country’s best-known sporting goods chains, and it arrives while demand for Clark-branded products is running high.

A first for two retail giants

Both Dick’s Sporting Goods and Foot Locker have worked with athletes before. Players have appeared in their marketing campaigns, shown up for in-store events, and joined other ventures. What neither company had done until now was sign an athlete at the brand level, making that person a formal, ongoing partner rather than a featured name for a single campaign.

The deal is also the first joint athlete partnership between the two retailers under Dick’s Inc., the parent company that now houses both brands. Rather than competing for the same star, the two chains are sharing one.

What the partnership includes

Under the agreement, Clark will work with both retailers on custom promotions built around her signature footwear, apparel, and product lines. Shoppers can expect coordinated marketing pushes in stores and online as new Clark products arrive.

The partnership goes beyond advertising. Clark will also take part in activations and community events, giving fans more chances to see her in person and giving the retailers a way to tie her appeal to local communities.

Riding the momentum of a record shoe launch

The timing is no accident. The deal follows the Oct. 1 global release of Clark’s first signature shoe with Nike, the largest women’s signature shoe launch in the company’s history. Nike paired the shoe with an 18-piece apparel collection.

Fans responded quickly. The shoe earned widespread praise, and inventory sold out within hours on Nike.com and other sneaker retail sites. For Dick’s and Foot Locker, both major sellers of athletic footwear, a direct partnership with Clark positions them to capture more of that demand as new releases and restocks hit shelves.

Foot Locker struck a similar note. “Caitlin’s influence reaches far beyond the court. She has captivated fans, inspired a new generation, and brought new energy to the game,” said Brett O’Brien, senior vice president and chief marketing officer of Foot Locker North America.

The numbers support that enthusiasm. A recent marketability ranking from SportsPro named Clark the most marketable player in the WNBA and the No. 15 most marketable athlete in the world.

Star power without a title

Clark’s commercial pull has held steady even after a disappointing finish. The Fever were eliminated in the first round of the WNBA playoffs, and Clark has yet to win a championship. Still, she remains one of the league’s biggest stars and one of its most reliable draws for fans and sponsors alike.

A growing endorsement portfolio

Dick’s and Foot Locker join an already impressive list. Clark has long-term endorsement deals with Nike, Wilson, Gatorade, State Farm and Panini, spanning footwear, equipment, beverages, insurance and trading cards.

This deal stands apart because of what it means for the retailers themselves. By making Clark their first-ever athlete partner, Dick’s and Foot Locker are signaling that they see her not just as a player who sells shoes, but as someone who can shape how they connect with the next generation of fans.
