Baylor women’s basketball to retire Mercury star Brittney Griner’s No. 42

As a Bear from 2009-13, she is still considered the best player to play for their program.

Collecting 3,283 points and 1,305 rebounds, Griner was a two-time National Player of the Year, four-time All-Big 12 First Team and All-Defensive Team member.

In 2010, she became the Freshman of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. Griner was also the Player and Defensive Player of the Year winner in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Since leaving, Griner still maintains Big 12 records in points scored (3,283), field goals made (1,247), free throws scored (787), free throws attempted (1,054) and blocks (748).

Baylor accumulated an overall record of 135-15 during her tenure, and Griner guided the Bears to a perfect 40-0 and the 2012 National Championship, their second of three titles in program history.

Making the switch to the WNBA, the 10-year veteran played 285 games, averages 20.8 points, 8.2 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per game.

As for playing for her country with the U.S. National team, Griner has racked up gold medals in the 2016 Olympics, 2020 Olympics, 2014 FIBA World Cup and 2018 World Cup.

Her jersey will be hung up in the rafters before the Bears face Texas Tech at Foster Pavilion in Waco, Texas.
