Brittney Griner had a profane response to retirement talks

Brittney Griner doesn’t feel that her time in the WNBA is done.

The new Connecticut Sun center had some choice words when she addressed the noise, connecting her to retirement.

During halftime of Sunday’s WNBA preseason game between the Connecticut Sun and the New York Liberty at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, the 10-time All-Star made it clear that she is not hanging up her sneakers anytime soon.

“I got a chip on my shoulder. A lot of people counting me out, want to call me old, want to say I need to retire and s–t. I’m not,” Griner said during an interview before joining her team in the locker room, per SI's Rosalina Lee.

Griner is beginning a new chapter in her career after signing a one-year contract with the Sun in April. She spent the 2025 season with the Atlanta Dream, with whom the two-time Defensive Player of the Year averaged a career-low 9.8 points across 39 games. She also recorded 5.2 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game.

At 35 years old, Griner is out to prove she can still be a huge contributor to a team, and she’ll get that chance with Connecticut before the franchise relocates to Houston in 2027.

The Sun won just 11 games in 2025 after going 28-12 and reaching the semifinals the season prior. If the Houston-born Griner can help the Sun turn things around and become a playoff contender in 2026, she could potentially earn a lucrative contract extension and eventually play for a team based in her hometown in 2027.
