Brittney Griner Makes Free Agent Decision For 2025 WNBA Season

Brittney Griner has only played for the Phoenix Mercury during her illustrious WNBA career. However, that could change by the start of the 2025 season.

Griner had a productive 2024 season in Phoenix, averaging 17.8 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. The highlight of her year most likely came during the Paris Olympics. That's because she captured her third career gold medal. While she's no longer in the prime of her career, the Baylor legend knows she still has value in the WNBA.

With that said, Griner announced this Tuesday that she's going to test the free agent market. She'll meet with other teams in Miami this week.

It'll be interesting to see what Griner's market is like this offseason. Teams in need of help at the center position would be wise to give her a call. There aren't many free agents who have averaged 17.7 points per game for their entire career.

Griner has been keeping herself busy this offseason, joining Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier's 3-on-3 league, Unrivaled. She's hoping this league will allow her to expand her skillset.

"It's going to challenge me to play a little bit differently," Griner said. "I've been trying to evolve my game anyway, not just playing on the low post always. Stretching out, playing on the wing a little bit. I'm looking forward to showcasing that and being challenged as well. And then I'll be in the best shape ever coming back [to Phoenix]."

Griner used to play for UMMC Ekaterinburg during the offseason. Obviously, her plans changed after being detained in Russia.

"I was used to playing year-round and then after everything that happened, I kind of felt like there was a void, because I should be playing and not really being off honestly," Griner said.

Griner is currently representing Phantom BC in Unrivaled. As for her WNBA team, that's a mystery for the first time in her career.
