Brittney Griner, the 2013 No. 1 overall pick, has been one of the WNBA’s most dominant centers. After spending her entire career with the Phoenix Mercury, where she became a two-time scoring champion and Olympic gold medalist, Griner made a bold decision ahead of the 2025 season. For the first time in her career, she switched teams, joining the Atlanta Dream on a one-year deal, marking a major shift in her basketball journey.
Her new chapter in Atlanta got off to a solid start, as Griner blended in well with the Dream’s rising core featuring Rhyne Howard, Allisha Gray, and Jordin Canada. She brought veteran leadership to a young squad hungry for a deeper playoff push.
Speaking on her decision to leave Phoenix, Griner shared her mindset per the Athletic: “I’m excited for a rebrand, to show something different.” Her move was especially surprising since she left a top-tier facility in Phoenix for a smaller arena in Atlanta. But for Griner, roster fit mattered more than comfort.
For the first time since being selected No. 1 in the 2013 WNBA Draft, Brittney Griner is playing on a new team.

It’s early, but she has already woven her infectious spirit into the fanbase.@AtlantaDream | @brittneygriner pic.twitter.com/8R0DBVTrVl
This season, she’s been making her presence felt. Griner is averaging 14.8 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 1.0 assist per game, strong numbers that prove she’s still a force in her 12th season.
"I definitely have a new energy being here in Atlanta. I feel I'm at home," Griner said.
However, it hasn’t been all smooth sailing. During a recent win against the Dallas Wings, Griner let her frustration show in a halftime interview, yelling at officials on live TV.
Despite the challenges, Griner’s message is clear, she’s here to compete, lead, and evolve. Her transition to the Dream signals not just a change in scenery but a new purpose. And if her start is any indication, she’s ready to make this chapter count.
