Brittney Griner has completed her first season with the Atlanta Dream. After spending the first 11 seasons of her WNBA career with the Phoenix Mercury, the 10-time All-Star signed with the Dream in the winter as a free agent, putting pen to paper on a one-year, $214,466 deal.
Griner was Atlanta’s starting center during the first half of the season. However, after sitting out three games due to a neck injury in early August, the 34-year-old was moved to the second unit by head coach Kyle Smesko. Griner came off the bench the rest of the way, including in the WNBA playoffs, where they lost to the Indiana Fever in the first round.
Griner is now entering a pivotal offseason. She will become an unrestricted free agent in January, leaving her future with the Dream unclear. There is no guarantee that Atlanta will offer Griner an extension, which means that she could be forced to find employment elsewhere.
Griner has continued putting in the work throughout the offseason. The two-time Defensive Player of the Year constantly posts her mantra on social media, “brick by brick,” which represents the hardworking mindset she embodies.
On Tuesday, Griner shared another update on the social platform Threads. This time, she revealed how she’s looking forward to her upcoming stint with Unrivaled.
“Working toward @unrivaledbasketball ” she wrote.
Unrivaled, a 3-on-3 league that was co-founded by WNBA stars Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart, previously announced Griner as one of the 48 players who will take part in the league’s second season in January. Other stars include Paige Bueckers, Cameron Brink, Kelsey Plum, Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell, to name a few.
Unrivaled also responded to Griner’s post, saying, “Can it be January already… ”
This will be Griner’s second season with Unrivaled. Last season, the two-time WNBA scoring champion led the 3-on-3 league in field goal shooting and in blocks.
Based on her offseason update, Griner is already preparing herself for her second stint with Unrivaled. This could potentially have implications for her offseason as well, presenting an opportunity to show WNBA teams what they can expect if they sign her.
Unrivaled will start on Jan. 5 and will be broadcast via TNT, truTV and HBO Max.
