As the WNBA and its players union hurdles towards a potential lockout while negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement, some of the league's strongest voices after openly called out WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert. One of the recent things that really got under peoples' skins was some alleged comments Engelbert made about Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark.

It was Napheesa Collier who exposed some alleged comments that Engelbert made, asserting in a recent interview that Clark "should be grateful" over how much money she earns outside of the WNBA, crediting the league with giving her the platform to do so.

“I asked how she planned to fix the fact that players like Caitlin [Clark], Angel [Reese] and Paige [Bueckers], who are clearly driving massive revenue for the league, are making so little their first four years,” Collier recently said. “Her response was, ‘Caitlin should be grateful she makes $16 million off the court, because without the platform that the WNBA gives her, she wouldn’t make anything.’ In that same conversation, she told me, ‘Players should be on their knee thanking their lucky stars for the media rights deal that I got them.'”

Clark saw Collier's message and praised her for her "valid points" while pointing out what an important moment the WNBA players have coming up.

"I have great respect for Phee... she made a lot of valid points. Phee said it all... This is straight-up the most important moment in this league's history," Clark said this week.

Respect for Clark and Collier

WNBA fans have long-since turned sour on Engelbert. So seeing Collier and Clark on the same page about the situation has a lot of fans very excited for what they can achieve for the players in the near future:

"There you have it...the face of the league is co-signing for Napheesa Collier...the proverbial ball is in your court Cathy Engelbert!" one user wrote on X.

"W players being really smart. They gonna get what they want even if it means a holdout… though 9 months should be plenty to come to a deal. NBA/investors have no choice because the W is becoming a real investment opportunity (see the soaring team valuations/expansion)," another remarked.

"Collier spoke the truth. Clark co-signed. Now the commissioner’s office is basically speed-running a PR nightmare," a third wrote.

"Yeah..Cathy better go ahead and start looking for another job at this point."

"lol engelbert needs a reality check in every sort of way or she’s gonna be out of a job soon"

The WNBA and WNBA players union are a few weeks away from a major clash over a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. If an agreement fails to get reached and we wind up with a long-term lockout, Engelbert will have far more problems on her hands than just Caitlin Clark’s supporters.
