Caitlin Clark Fires Pointed Message at Indiana Fever Fans

Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark voiced strong support for head coach Stephanie White on Tuesday night after some fans booed the coach during pregame introductions ahead of a 106-92 victory over the New York Liberty.

Clark addressed the moment directly after the game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse and fired a very honest and pointed message at Fever fans.

“I hated that our fans booed her before the game. That made me a little sick, to be honest. We’re going to ride for her, and we’re always going to have her back.”

The comments came following White’s impassioned pregame remarks to reporters in which she defended her players and criticized external narratives surrounding the team and the WNBA. White, in her second season with the Fever, said the hate, fearmongering and divisiveness attempting to disrupt the league would not succeed. She emphasized unity within the roster and declared she would always stand by her players.

White pounded her fist on a table during the roughly 2½-minute statement and left without taking questions. The remarks responded in part to criticism of her postgame comments after Saturday’s win at Chicago, where Sky guard DiJonai Carrington was ejected for a flagrant 2 foul on Fever guard Sophie Cunningham.

Carrington’s foul, which involved contact to Cunningham’s head and neck area on a fast-break layup, was upgraded upon review.

White, who previously coached Carrington with the Connecticut Sun, said officials made the correct call but also noted Carrington’s competitive style and indicated she did not believe the contact was intentional toward the neck. Some fans and public figures, including Indiana’s lieutenant governor, called for White’s dismissal in the aftermath.

Clark said she spoke with White earlier Tuesday and assured her the team would not lose that night. She expressed personal affection for White’s leadership.

The Fever entered the contest at 20-12 and improved to 21-12 with the win, having taken seven of their previous nine games. Kelsey Mitchell scored 28 points, including 20 in the first half, while Clark finished with 22 points and 10 assists for her 10th double-double of the season.

Aliyah Boston added 19 points and seven rebounds, and Cunningham contributed 12 points. Indiana shot 59 percent from the field overall and connected on 16 of 25 three-point attempts.

The Fever built a 64-46 halftime lead, fueled by strong perimeter shooting early. They extended control with a late second-quarter run and held off a third-quarter push from the Liberty, who had gone 8-1 since a prior loss to Indiana.

Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu each scored 19 points for New York, which fell to 20-14. Jonquel Jones recorded 14 points and 10 rebounds. White has guided the Fever through a season marked by high visibility and frequent external scrutiny.

Team president Kelly Krauskopf publicly backed the coach, noting her role in keeping the group focused amid the spotlight and positioning Indiana for a playoff push. The Fever rank among the Eastern Conference leaders and rank near the top of the league in offensive efficiency.

Clark’s defense of White underscored the internal cohesion the coach highlighted. The guard has previously described their relationship as competitive yet supportive, with both sharing a drive to win.
