Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark had a strong performance during the Fever's season opener. The second-year player secured a triple-double with 20 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, proving that she's not slowing down.
But a great gesture from the Iowa native helped her teammate, DeWanna Bonner, make history in her first game with the Fever.
At the start of the game, Bonner sat fourth on the WNBA's all-time scoring list, just six points behind Tina Thompson. Bonner had scored five points in the game and as time was running out it looked like she might have to wait until the Fever's next game to move up the list.
Clark was heard during a timeout letting her teammates know that Bonner was just shy of securing third place, and imploring them to get her a basket. Clark, who was mic'd up for the ESPN and ABC broadcasts of the game, said, "Hey, let's get a basket for DB right now. Come on, we're getting DB into third place right now."
I love this for DB. Moving into 3rd on the all time scoring list, a standing ovation in front of a sold out crowd, and a team that wanted it just as badly for her. ❤️

Shortly after Clark's encouragement, Natasha Howard found Bonner with a sweet pass and Bonner was fouled. Standing at the free-throw line, Bonner was just two points shy of third place. The first free throw was good, and Bonner rejoiced by throwing her hands in the air.
She received a standing ovation before securing the second free throw and moving into third place. Bonner exited the game shortly after, which saw more applause and cheers for the veteran.
In her postgame interview, Clark was ecstatic for her teammate. She described Bonner as a "Hall of Famer, a legend." Clark remarked that she was happy Bonner's record-setting points came from the free-throw line, which allowed the fans to appreciate Bonner for a moment before the game started again.
Bonner sits behind Tina Charles (7,696), who is still active, and Diana Taurasi (10,646), who retired after last season.
The Fever secured the win in their first game of the season, dominating the Chicago Sky. With a sharp Fever team, Bonner is likely to see her numbers rise even more.
