Few would argue the WNBA has had its share of issues this season regarding the increased physicality during games, and the lack of fouls called as a result.
The Indiana Fever have been one of the more outspoken teams this year regarding the job done by the refs during games, with head coach Stephanie White even bringing the issue to everyone’s attention after a game a few weeks ago.
Fever guard Sophie Cunningham made headlines last month for a run-in she had with officials after she fouled Connecticut Sun guard Jacy Sheldon hard under the basket, resulting in an ejection and a benches-clearing scuffle in the waning minutes of a game in retaliation for an earlier play involving Sheldon and Caitlin Clark.
Not long before Cunningham’s blindside, Sheldon poked Clark in the eye as she was defending, and moments later, Sun guard Marina Mabrey charged forward and shoved Clark to the floor. Clark was assessed a technical for shoving Sheldon after the eye poke, and Sheldon was hit with a flagrant while Mabrey received a technical.
That incident was just one of many that has had fans calling for the league to crack down on how physical the games have gotten, and subsequently the number of injuries that have resulted from it.
But instead WNBA officials have gone in a different direction.
Cunningham revealed on X on Wednesday that she had been fined $500 for a TikTok video she posted, in which she criticized the league’s officiating crew via Sabrina Carpenter’s song “Manchild.”
“Stupid, or is it slow? Maybe it’s useless,” the lyrics read with the caption “@ some refs.”
I got fined $500 for this TikTok idk why this is funny to me… like ok you got it bud! Cause there’s not more important things to be worried about with our league right now pic.twitter.com/ELAlguHhMQ

“I got fined $500 for this TikTok idk why this is funny to me,” Cunningham wrote on X. “…like ok you got it bud! Cause there’s not more important things to be worried about with our league right now.”
Several fans took to the comment section to put the WNBA on blast for a seemingly trivial punishment.
“IMAGINE league watching TikTok’s just to fine players for talking smack to refs. Hey maybe if everyone saying it - it’s true? I wish they were as swift as they ask for money when it comes to hearing what you guys ask and deserve. Do better @WNBA,” one fan scoffed.
“The endless WNBA war on the people who are bringing attention to their product while protecting the behavior that turns people off NEVER ceases to amazed me,” another exclaimed.
“Wow, is this how the league plans to make money?” asked one user.
“Where is the go gofund me..we got you,” another fan remarked.
