Caitlin Clark’s Exchange With Kelsey Mitchell After Fever Loss Turns Attention to Their Relationship

Caitlin Clark joined the Indiana Fever for Game 1 of their WNBA playoffs matchup against the Atlanta Dream on Sunday. The 23-year-old, however, was forced to cheer from the bench as she continues to rehab a season-ending groin injury.

Clark watched teammate Kelsey Mitchell go off in another incredible performance. The three-time All-Star dropped a game-high 27 points on 9-of-18 shooting, which still wasn’t enough to carry the Fever to victory.

MVP contender Allisha Gray registered 20 points, six rebounds and four assists to lead the Dream to a convincing 80-68 victory and put them ahead in the series, 1-0.

After the game, Clark was seen exiting the court alongside Mitchell. Clark appeared to offer her support to her teammate after the tough loss.

This brief on-court moment speaks volumes about Clark’s relationship with Mitchell. There have been rumors — most, if not all of them, baseless — that there is some tension between the two Fever stars. As referenced in the caption of the video above, Clark rallying behind Mitchell after Game 1 refutes claims about any supposed beef.

Beyond fan speculation about the state of their relationship, there was an instance where Mitchell’s sister agreed with a post that seemed to downplay Clark’s impact on the team. However, that said nothing about how the two teammates actually feel about each other, and their interaction on Sunday was a glimpse into what their relationship is actually like.

It is also worth noting that Mitchell, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 WNBA draft out of Ohio State, has spent all eight seasons of her professional career with the Fever. Prior to Clark’s arrival in 2024, Indiana averaged just 8.1 wins per season over Mitchell’s career with the Fever (they won 24 games this year). Indiana also failed to make the playoffs every year until 2024, Clark’s rookie season.

With Clark out of the picture this year, Mitchell has no other choice but to carry a significant load for the Fever. Indiana will need her to be at her best if they hope to keep their season alive.

Game 2 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse is on Tuesday, and Mitchell and Co. will need to leave it all on the floor against a Dream side that is just one win away from booking their spot in the next round of the WNBA playoffs.
