In a game that lived up to its billing, WNBA star Caitlin Clark and rookie Paige Bueckers faced each other as professionals for the first time last week, in a game between Clark’s Indiana Fever and Bueckers’ Dallas Wings.
Fever head coach Stephanie White called the moment a “special opportunity,” comparing the matchup to other iconic moments in the sports like that of LeBron James and Steph Curry.
“Everybody wants to see star players,” White said. “Think about who tunes in to watch LeBron vs. Steph (Curry), right? It’s those kinds of matchups. To watch Caitlin and Paige go against each other for the first time in their WNBA careers is going to be special.”
Before the game, Clark and Bueckers gave words of admiration for each other and showed their respect for being on-court opponents all the way from their college days, with Clark playing in Iowa and Bueckers for UConn.
“I think if you asked both of us how life could’ve panned out, nobody could’ve expected it to be like this,” Bueckers said of Clark and herself. “We’re very grateful. We’re very blessed to be able to play and be in this position that we are.”
“She just plays way older than she is,” Clark said of Bueckers. “She’s confident. She’s smooth. She just does everything at a high level. Can score from all three levels, and that’s how she’s always played. And that’s obviously translated really well. Everybody knew that it would.”
So far this season, Caitlin Clark averages 16.9 points per game, 8.6 assists, and 4.9 rebounds. She shoots 37.4% from the field, and 28.9% from beyond the arc.
