The Chicago Sky suffered another tough loss on Thursday, falling 99–74 to the defending WNBA champion New York Liberty. This came just five days after their season-opening 35-point defeat to the Indiana Fever.

Chicago stayed competitive early, trailing just 28–23 after the first quarter. However, they were outscored 25–9 in the second, allowing New York to pull away and build a commanding double-digit lead that they maintained throughout the rest of the game.

For the Liberty, Natasha Cloud led the charge with 18 points, eight assists, and four rebounds. Sabrina Ionescu added 16 points and five assists, while Kennedy Burke contributed 17 points off the bench in a balanced and historic team effort as they set the WNBA record for most made 3-pointers in a single game with 19.

On the Sky’s side, bright spots were limited. Rachel Banham led the team with 15 points off the bench, but the overall performance left fans with little to celebrate.

What sparked the most fan reaction, however, came after the game—when the Sky named Courtney Vandersloot their "Player of the Game." Vandersloot posted 14 points, three assists, two rebounds, and two steals, and the team’s social media account posted the update with a drawn-out “SLOOOOOOOOOT.”

The decision to highlight a Player of the Game after a lopsided loss drew significant backlash, many of whom had the same reaction on Saturday after their loss to the Fever.

"We shouldn’t have players of the game when we lose," a fan said.

Another fan posted, "{Explicit] is this? They don’t even do this at the YMCA!"

Someone else added, "Why is this the only [explicit] team that does this? Like player of the game for getting blown out?"

"Ya'll need to chill out for posting ANYTHING right now, and I'm a Sky fan," a fan reacted.

One more fan commented, "I love Sloot, but there was no ‘Player of the Game’ in this atrocious performance."

The Sky are now 0-2 on the young WNBA season and will be back in action again on Sunday night when they head back on the road for a matchup against the Los Angeles Sparks
