It is, presumably, only a short-term absence for Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever. And certainly, the WNBA is hoping that is the case, though quad injuries can be stubborn. But Clark suffered the injury on May 24, in the Fever's thrilling 90-88 loss to the New York Liberty, and the team said she would be re-evaluated in two weeks.
That two-week mark comes up on Saturday, which means the fourth--and for the Fever, hopefully, final--game she will miss comes this weekend when Indiana visits the Sky in Chicago.
The problem for the Sky: They have already moved that game to the United Center, with an eye on breaking the all-time record for attendance at a WNBA game. Clark and the Fever drove that record earlier this season, when they drew 20,711 to Capital One Arena in Washington--home of the NBA's Wizards--to play the Mystics.
With a capcity of 20,917, the United Center was poised to topple that record. But the injury to Clark means Chicago probably will not set that record, as ticket demand on the secondary market has collapsed.
"Clark’s injury sent the resale market plummeting, with prices dropping by an average of 70% in the first 48 hours after her injury was announced, according to TickPick. Upper-level tickets originally priced at $125 are now available for less than $20 on SeatGeek," the Chicago Tribune's Julia Poe wrote.
The game is still close to a sell-out, even if many with tickets are looking to unload them. Poe wrote, "Saturday’s game is on track to break the franchise attendance record of 16,444 — set in 2016 at Allstate Arena — but Clark’s absence could dilute attendance just enough to miss the league record."
The hope for Indiana is that Clark is ready to go on Tuesday, June 10, in Atlanta, which will be more than two weeks after the injury. The Dream moved their home opener to the NBA's State Farm Arena in May, but are playing next week's game at Gateway Center Arena, their usual home.
