Chicago Sky hire former WNBA head coach to pair with Angel Reese

Tyler Marsh is wasting no time putting together big names on staff for the Chicago Sky. The new head coach is tasked with trying to turn around a team that went 13-27 in 2023, finishing with the league’s 10th-worst record.

Marsh has some solid pieces on the Sky. Power forward Angel Reese made the WNBA All-Rookie Team and WNBA All-Star team in 2024. The 22-year-old led the league in rebounding.

The Sky need to take the next step via the draft and with coaching.

The Chicago Sky added a former WNBA head coach

Per Julia Poe with the Chicago Tribune, Marsh hired former Atlanta Dream head coach Tanisha Wright as an assistant coach for the Sky this week.

“Wright is a 15-year veteran of the WNBA as a coach and a player,” Poe wrote. “She helmed the Dream from 2021 before she was released by the team this fall following a 15-25 season. Wright was named the AP Coach of the Year in 2022.

“Before Atlanta, Wright was an assistant with the Las Vegas Aces, although she departed for the Dream head coaching position before current Aces coach Becky Hammon — who was a crucial mentor to Marsh — took over the program. Wright will bring a variety of experience to Marsh’s bench including international scouting.”

Wright brings WNBA championship experience

Wright played college basketball at Penn State. The product of West Mifflin Area High School in Pennsylvania went No. 12 in the 2005 WNBA draft to the Seattle Storm. The 41-year-old coach won a WNBA championship with the Storm in 2010.

Wright went 48-69 in her three seasons with Atlanta and 0-4 in the postseason. The Dream went 15-25 in 2024.
