Chicago Sky Send Three Words to Kamilla Cardoso Before Absence
Jacob Musselman / For IndyStar / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Chicago Sky currently sit at a 4-10 record, anchored near the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings and seeking consistency under first-year head coach Tyler Marsh.

Their most recent victory came on Tuesday in a matchup against the Los Angeles Sparks, breaking a three-game skid and giving the organization reason for cautious optimism.

In that win, much of the offensive burden fell to second-year center Kamilla Cardoso.

The 24-year-old Brazilian poured in a career-high 27 points along with seven rebounds and three assists to lift the Sky to a 97-86 victory.

Yet as Cardoso celebrates one of the best games of her young career, the team must now prepare for her impending absence.

The Sky took to X on Wednesday to send a simple three-word message: "GOOD LUCK, MILLA ," noting that she "will temporarily step away from the Sky as she suits up for her home country, joining the Brazilian National Team for the 2025 FIBA AmeriCup! ."

A five-star recruit out of Hamilton Heights Christian Academy in Tennessee, Cardoso starred at Syracuse before transferring to South Carolina, where she won two NCAA championships (2022 and 2024) and earned the Most Outstanding Player award in 2024.

Drafted third overall by Chicago that same year, Cardoso overcame an early shoulder injury to contribute 9.8 points, 7.9 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game as a rookie, securing a spot on the WNBA All-Rookie Team.

Cardoso has also represented Brazil at multiple FIBA AmeriCups, winning bronze in 2021 and silver in 2023 before being named MVP of the 2023 tournament in Mexico.

She also claimed MVP honors at the 2022 South American Championship, averaging a double-double with 14.8 points and 11.4 rebounds per game.

The 2025 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup runs from Saturday, June 28, to Sunday, July 6, and Brazil will play against Argentina, Canada, the Dominican Republic and El Salvador.

Over that time, Chicago will face the Golden State Valkyries (7-6), Los Angeles and the Minnesota Lynx (12-2), all on the road.
