The Chicago Sky enter Friday's matchup against the Golden State Valkyries sitting at 4-10 on the season, near the bottom of both the Eastern Conference and the entire WNBA standings.

Through 14 games, the Sky are averaging 77.9 points per game, second-worst in the league, and conceding 88.2 points per contest, the highest mark in the WNBA.

To make matters worse, Sky center Kamilla Cardoso is now set to miss the next handful of games as she joins the Brazilian national team at the 2025 FIBA Women's AmeriCup in Santiago, Chile.

As she departs the team temporarily, Cardoso posted an Instagram story alongside veteran forward Damiris Dantas, a current member of the Indiana Fever who will also be competing for Brazil.

After starring at Hamilton Heights Christian Academy in Tennessee, Cardoso spent her freshman year at Syracuse before transferring to South Carolina, where she won NCAA championships in 2022 and 2024.

In 2024, she was named NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player, led the Gamecocks to their second title in three year and earned a slew of defensive and All-American honors, including WBCA Defensive Player of the Year and first-team All-SEC.

Selected third overall by the Sky in the 2024 WNBA draft, Cardoso made an immediate impact, averaging 9.8 points, 7.9 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game en route to a spot on the WNBA All-Rookie Team.

Overseas, she starred for the Shanghai Swordfish in the WCBA, where she was named International Player of the Year for 2025, and has already suited up for Brazil for two previous FIBA AmeriCup tournaments (2021, 2023) and a South American Championship in 2022.

As this year's AmeriCup tournament unfolds, Cardoso will aim to defend Brazil’s crown as her teammates back in Chicago will work to keep the Sky afloat until their rising star returns.
