Connecticut Sun re-sign reigning WNBA MVP Jonquel Jones

One day following the news that former WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart had re-signed with the Seattle Storm, the Connecticut Sun announced Tuesday that they had retained the services of the reigning league MVP, Jonquel Jones. Contract details have not yet been released.

The former 2016 sixth-overall pick of the Los Angeles Sparks just completed her fifth WNBA season, all with the Sun. Jones was traded with 2016 second-round pick Jamie Weisner to Connecticut for Chelsea Gray and three draft picks on the day of the 2016 event.

"I am so happy to be back in Connecticut," Jones said in a statement, per The Athletic. "This organization has believed in me since day one and I definitely feel like we have unfinished business."

The 28-year-old forward is coming off of a season in which she made her third career All-Star team and averaged career highs in points (19.4), assists (2.8), steals (1.3) and minutes per game (31.7), while adding a league-leading 11.2 rebounds, with 1.3 blocks per contest in 27 games. Jones added a .515/.362/.802 shooting line and helped the team finish the season first in the Eastern Conference at 26-6.

Jones earned first team All-WNBA honors for the first time in 2021 and was named to the All-Defensive team as well. The native of the Bahamas averaged 16.3 points, 9.8 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.3 blocks and 1.3 steals per game across the 2021 playoffs, but the Sun fell in the semifinals to the Chicago Sky.
