Courtney Williams Calls Olivia Miles a 'Baby Chelsea Gray'

Just one point separated the two teams as the Atlanta Dream pulled off a dramatic 91-90 comeback win over the Minnesota Lynx on May 9. But even after the heartbreaking loss, Courtney Williams could not stop herself from praising rookie sensation Olivia Miles.

Williams lauded Miles’ on-court prowess during a post-game press conference. An X update by Andrew Dukowitz displayed the Lynx’s No. 10 admiration for the way Miles stays hungry for the ball to make things happen on the court.

Williams said, “I mean, she’s a little killer. Aye, man, I said, look, let me move out your way. Let me move out your way and move to the tube and let you do what you do best,” Williams said.

Williams then compared Miles to Chelsea Gray because of how she controls the game naturally, along with having an easy-going persona.

“I mean, happy to have her. Happy to be back in my natural position, and she out here killing it, man. So, like I said, this little joker here, like a little baby Chelsea Graves. Like, she gonna be cold. She gonna be so cold,” she added.

Well, Miles’ stats speak volumes about the reason behind Williams’ appreciation. In 34 minutes, Miles finished with 21 points, 8 assists, 3 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 blocks. She also shot 6-of-14 from the field, 1-of-2 from three-point range, and a perfect 8-of-8 from the free-throw line.

And that very performance also helped Olivia Miles make impressive WNBA history in her debut.

Miles became just the fifth player ever to record 20+ points and 5+ assists in a debut, joining Cynthia Cooper, Dawn Staley, Tonya Edwards, and Candace Parker. She also became the first player since Parker in 2008 to post at least 20 points and 8 assists in a WNBA debut.

But beyond the historic stat line, it was Olivia Miles’ confidence and control on the court that truly caught everyone’s attention.

Olivia Miles Ready for Phoenix Mercury Challenge

Olivia Miles looked calm and confident despite the pressure of playing her first regular-season WNBA game. And after the performance, Cheryl Reeve made it clear she was impressed with what the rookie guard showed at Target Center.

“She played great. She did a lot of things well,” Reeve said after the game. Still, Miles admitted the physicality of the WNBA immediately stood out to her.

“Was feeling it wind-wise. You know that the pace and the intensity is different. Obviously, you’re being really physical both on and off the ball,” the 23-year-old said.

Now that she has experienced the true intensity of the WNBA, the rookie has already set her eyes on the next game. She said, “I can’t wait to just grow after every game. Like, just see more and more and learn more and more more and more.”

Now, with the Minnesota Lynx set to face the Phoenix Mercury in two days, all eyes will be on how Miles performs against a veteran star trio featuring Alyssa Thomas, Kahleah Copper, and DeWanna Bonner.

So, do you think the Lynx No. 5 will be able to bring her side the first victory of the season against the Mercury on May 13?
