DeWanna Bonner made headlines after a Tuesday report noted that she wanted out of Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever. While the veteran guard/forward has yet to respond to the heated speculations, she shared a glimpse at her personal life amidst her absence from the Fever.
The said rumors began when Front Office Sports’ Annie Costabile revealed a crucial piece about Bonner’s situation with Indiana.
“Multiple sources told Front Office Sports that the fit in Indiana was ‘off’ from the beginning. Bonner — who was signed to be an anchor with championship experience for the team’s young core — was expected to be a starter. The Fever declined to comment,” Costabile wrote.
“Those same sources indicated Bonner’s preferred landing spots are with the Phoenix Mercury or the Atlanta Dream.”
DeWanna Bonner is missing five consecutive games for Indiana so far due to “personal reasons,” something that she and the Fever hadn’t fully revealed the reason why to the public. While her team faced the Seattle Storm on Tuesday, the former Auburn posted pictures of her daughter on Instagram as they shopped. The two-time WNBA champion wrote:
“My greatest loves!! I love you!

Meanwhile, DeWanna Bonner’s fiancé, Alyssa Thomas, commented with three hearts. They became partners during the 2023 WNBA All-Star Weekend. However, the rumors speculating Bonner has also reached Thomas. The Phoenix Mercury forward coldly declined to answer any questions about reuniting with Bonner at the Mercury.

Before the Indiana Fever’s game against Seattle, head coach Stephanie White had made it clear that she is yet to be involved in the rumors regarding the possible departure of DeWanna Bonner from the team. Per IndyStar reporter Chloe Peterson, White said:
“I haven’t had a lot of conversations with [Bonner] recently. You know, really focused on the team we have right here, and what we need to do to position ourselves to win.”

Averaging a career-low 7.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.6 assists this season, DeWanna Bonner played for nine games with the Fever before White put her on the bench, particularly in exchange for Lexie Hull. A lack of playing time might be a key factor for Bonner to take leave.
However, the Fever does need to take some precautions in case Bonner does leave the team. Without the 37-year-old veteran, the team will have frontcourt problems, especially since Damirias Dantas will leave for the upcoming AmeriCup. Fewer players for Indiana meant higher risks for the Caitlin Clark-led squad to struggle more ahead of the season.
