The Atlanta Dream have had a rocky ride in the 2025 regular season. On Sunday, they beat the Connecticut Sun 79-55. After a strong win over the Dallas Wings 83-75, the team came into Sunday’s game against the Sun with key players like Te-Hina Paopao and Jordin Canada ruled out. And during that same game, the spotlight shifted to Brittney Griner’s unexpected absence.
Griner has been central to Atlanta’s game plan this season. The 34-year-old center has averaged 14.8 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, including a 21-point outing against the Indiana Fever. Her presence was felt in the Dallas win, where she put up 15 points and 8 boards. However, her injury on left knee left fans and teammates surprised on Sunday.
Coach Karl Smesko didn’t go into specifics but acknowledged the sudden change.
"I didn't really say anything to her," he said. "I think Coach Lyles, this was her scout, and I think she spent a lot of time talking to Naz(Naz Hillmon), especially when we found out BG was going to be a late scratch for the game."
"But the thing is, Naz has been really good with all of her minutes so far. And, you know, I said we were going to play her more today," Smesko said about Hillmon.

While Griner has drawn attention for both her performance and past off-court headlines, including her detainment in Russia and social activism, her value on the hardwood remains undeniable. Her limited games this season (only six played) still reflect her dominance and leadership.
As the Dream push through a tough stretch, they’re hoping for Griner’s quick return.
