Fever Get Unfortunate Injury News About Caitlin Clark Teammate Before Dream Game

Things don’t seem to be getting any better for Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham.

The 28-year-old guard missed the team’s 93-58 season-opening win over Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky on Saturday due to an ankle injury, and she was recently named in a lawsuit involving Phoenix Suns CEO Josh Bartelstein.

As it that weren’t bad enough, Cunningham will have to wait a little longer to make her Fever debut after the team announced on Tuesday evening that she won’t play in that night’s matchup against the Atlanta Dream.

“Status Report for tonight’s game against the Dream: Sophie Cunningham - Out (right ankle),” the Fever posted on X.

Cunningham had been participating in practice and shoot-around during the last week, and head coach Stephanie White seemed optimistic on Monday that her return wasn’t too far off.

“She’s progressing well, and we see her every day with her movement,” White told reporters on Monday. “Every day we see her more confident, a little more balanced. I’m sure Sophie wants to play tomorrow, but she has to go through more tests to see if she will be ready.

“But in my mind, I want to make sure that she’s 100% ready. We’ve got a lot of games in a short period time and we need her on the floor. I don’t want to rush it and have any setbacks, so we’ll see what her testing [looks like] and then meet with a training staff and talk with Sophie about a game plan.”

Cunningham, who joined Indiana in a three-team offseason trade, injured her ankle during a preseason game against the Dream when she stepped on Rhyne Howard's foot while attempting a rebound in the third quarter.

She landed awkwardly on her right ankle as she fell to the court and was ultimately helped to the sideline to be evaluated. She tested the ankle by jogging on the sideline before heading to the locker room.
