Fever Star Sophie Cunningham Had Something to Say About Mercury Before Facing Former Team

The Indiana Fever are back in action on Wednesday night as they host the Phoenix Mercury in a home game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The Fever are looking to carry over the momentum of their 93-78 victory over their biggest rivals, the Chicago Sky, on Sunday. Indiana is also hoping to make it three in a row with a win against the Mercury.

The matchup against Phoenix will be extra special for Fever star Sophie Cunningham. The 6-foot-1 guard will get the opportunity to face off against her former team with whom she parted ways during the offseason.

Sophie Cunningham Has Words for Mercury

Cunningham had a few things to say about the Mercury ahead of her first matchup against her former squad.

“I have nothing but good things to say about Phoenix,” Cunningham said, via Chloe Peterson of Indy Star. “It was my home for six years. I created a lot of fond memories and relationships and close, close friendships out there.

“And so it's gonna be really nice to see some of those people.”

Cunningham Makes Her Loyalty Clear

The Mercury traded Cunningham to the Fever in the offseason via a three-team deal with the Dallas Wings. Satou Sabally to Phoenix was the biggest piece of the deal. The Fever gave up NaLyssa Smith and the No. 8 pick of the 2025 WNBA Draft to the Wings. In exchange, they got Cunningham and the No. 19 pick.

Cunningham’s rise in Indiana has been phenomenal. She’s established herself as a household name among the Fever faithful with her impact on the team both on and off the court.

Ahead of the Mercury matchup, Cunningham just had to make it abundantly clear that her loyalty now lies with her current team.

“But for me, I’m just all-in,” she said of the Fever. “I'm happy to be here in Indiana.”

In 21 games played for the Fever this season, Cunningham has averaged 7.5 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.0 steals, while also knocking down 1.5 triples per contest.
