Sophie Cunningham has now started what is expected to be a lengthy road to recovery following her season-ending injury. The Indiana Fever star suffered a torn MCL in her right knee following an in-game collision against the Connecticut Sun on Aug. 17. She underwent surgery a couple of days later and has since commenced her rehabilitation process.
Cunningham discussed her recent surgery on Tuesday’s episode of her “Show Me Something” podcast with good friend and reality TV star West Wilson. The 29-year-old even revealed that she’s been taking a high dose of painkillers to help manage the effects of the surgery.
At one point in their conversation, Cunningham proudly shared a surprising piece of news she had received from the doctors.
"Honestly, real good,” the Fever guard said of how she’s feeling after going under the knife. “They went in there and everything... Oh, listen to this: They said for my age and for what I do for a living, that my knees are looking real nice."
Based on this crucial piece of information, it appears that Cunningham will be able to make a full recovery as expected. It’s great to know that the condition of her knees is still “real nice” despite the wear and tear it has sustained over the years, as well as after a major injury that could have put her basketball career in jeopardy.
Cunningham did not provide a timetable on her return to the court, though. At this point, it’s likely too early to tell when she will be able to come back, considering how she’s currently just days removed from a major surgery.
However, for context, recovery for more severe cases can extend for up to 12 months. In other instances, though, recovery time is less, so it will all really depend on how Cunningham’s knee responds to the rehab process.
For now, there is no guarantee that the former Missouri star will be ready to start the new season in May 2026.
It is worth noting that Cunningham is entering free agency in the offseason. She is currently under a one-year contract with the Fever, which will expire at the conclusion of the 2025 season.
In 30 games played in her debut season for Indiana, Cunningham was able to produce averages of 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 10 steals and 1.7 triples in 25.2 minutes per contest.
