One of the WNBA's top players was on the move Tuesday as the Phoenix Mercury made the trade for five-time All-Star Alyssa Thomas.

Per ESPN.com's Alexa Philippou, Phoenix sent a package of Natasha Cloud, Rebecca Allen and the 12th overall pick to Connecticut in return for one of the greatest players in the Sun's history.

Thomas helped lead the franchise to six consecutive semifinal appearances and a pair of Finals berths in 2019 and 2022, on her way to finishing top-five in MVP voting each of the last three seasons.

The 6-foot-2 point forward is widely regarded as one of The W's best passers and defenders and she brings a winning mentality every time she touches the floor.

Last year, the 32-year-old veteran averaged 10.6 points, 8.4 rebounds and 7.9 assists while also adding 1.5 steals and half a block per game.

Thomas' exit comes amidst a myriad of changes for the Sun who recently replaced head coach Stephanie White with former Belgium national team coach Rachid Meziane.

She now joins a Mercury team that has plenty of decisions of its own to make with only two players currently under contract in Kahleah Copper and Sophie Cunningham.

Diana Taurasi's decision still lingers over the franchise and All-Star center Brittney Griner is an unrestricted free agent. But Phoenix is expected to be a major player this offseason as evidenced by today's blockbuster trade.

How well she fits into Nate Tibbett's three-pointer heavy system is another question. But if the Mercury can surround her with shooters it shouldn't really be much of an issue.
