Before she became the No. 2 pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft and a rising star for the LA Sparks, Cameron Brink’s hoop dreams almost came undone by a pediatrician’s prediction.

In the premiere episode of Delta Air Lines’ new docuseries Power Forward, titled “Takeoff,” Brink’s mom, Michelle Bain-Brink, recalled a moment that revealed just how badly young Cameron wanted to become a professional baller.

“Both the kids are at the pediatrician getting a normal checkup,” Michelle said. “And, all of a sudden, I hear her cry like, ‘Mom!’ And I’m like, ‘What’s going on?’ I turn and she’s starting to cry because the pediatrician told her she was gonna grow up to be 5-10.”

That was unacceptable to Cameron.

“She’s like, ‘5-10 is not tall. I wanna be taller than my mom. I have to be at least 6-3,’” Michelle added.

Looking back at the story, Brink admitted it still hits her hard.

“I cried 20 times watching it,” she said, laughing through the emotion. “I’m just an emotional person. And I cried when I thought I was going to be 5-10.”

Brink’s competitive fire burned early, even within the family.

“I just wanted to be taller than my mom,” she said. “And you know, I played my dad one-on-one. I was a sophomore in high school when I finally beat him. It always comes back to family for me.”

Fast forward to today, and Brink stands 6-foot-4—taller than both parents, and more than tall enough to dominate in the paint. She became Stanford’s all-time blocks leader before making her mark in the pros.

Cameron Brink Nearing WNBA Return After ACL Injury

Cameron Brink’s rookie season was cut short last June after she tore her ACL, but she might be returning to action sooner than expected.

Unlike most players who suffer such injuries, Brink walked off the court under her own power. She’s reportedly eyeing a return around the 2025 WNBA All-Star Game in July.

Los Angeles Sparks forward Cameron Brink (22) reaches for the ball against Indiana Fever center Temi Fagbenle (14) on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, during the game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The Los Angeles Sparks defeated the Indiana Fever, 88-82.

Before the injury, she was already proving her value—averaging 7.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks in just 22 minutes per game.

The Sparks will be patient with her recovery, but make no mistake: Brink is ready to rise again.
