Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark has the potential to bring in more than $1 billion in revenue for the WNBA, as assessed by a finance professor from Indiana University Columbus.
In a recent interview with NBC News, Indiana University Columbus finance professor Dr. Ryan Brewer talked about the potential impact of Caitlin Clark as she stays longer in the WNBA.
“If things just go as they were, and we have an expanded season of 22 home games with modest inflation, I’m looking at $875 [million],” Brewer told NBC News. “And I could easily see that eclipsing a billion dollars on the economic impact of Caitlin Clark this year.”
In December 2024, Dr. Brewer also talked with the Indy Star about his analysis of the value of Caitlin Clark to the WNBA, considering that 2024 was only her rookie season in the league.
Dr. Brewer’s analysis highlighted Caitlin Clark’s extraordinary impact on the WNBA, attributing 26.5% of the league’s total economic activity to her presence. Her influence extended across multiple revenue streams, including ticket sales, merchandise, and television viewership.
Clark’s games alone accounted for a significant portion of broadcast value, with TV ratings skyrocketing by 300% and merchandise sales increasing by 500%. With her arrival, the Indiana Fever saw record-breaking attendance, averaging over 17,000 fans per game, a first in WNBA history.
Beyond the league, Clark’s presence has generated an estimated $36 million in economic impact for Indianapolis.
During the Indiana Fever’s 91-90 loss to the Atlanta Dream, a controversial no-call on Caitlin Clark in the final seconds left fans and the Fever frustrated. Clark attempted to drive to the basket but was met with contact from Dream defenders, appearing to be fouled. However, the referees did not call a foul, leading to an immediate reaction from Clark and her teammates.
Fever head coach Stephanie White expressed disappointment over the officiating, stating that the team has faced inconsistent calls in recent game.
“I don’t know. I have to go back and watch,” she said about the topic, in a post-game interview. “
“I thought [Clark] got fouled. I think it’s pretty egregious what’s been happening to us the last few games… I might be able to understand it if we were just chucking threes, but we’re not. We’re attacking the rim. And the disrespect right now for our team has been pretty unbelievable. It’s disappointing that it doesn’t go both ways, or hasn’t gone both ways.”
