Caitlin Clark was at the center of another heated confrontation, this time with the Atlanta Dream’s Rhyne Howard on Thursday night.

The skirmish occurred in the final seconds of the opening quarter when tight defense from Howard led to a foul on Clark. As the whistle blew, the two bumped shoulders and exchanged words, with Howard allegedly saying, “Try it,” before her teammates intervened to stop the escalation.

As Clark’s teammates pulled her away, she responded to Howard’s taunt.

“I’m not scared of you,” Clark said.

Atlanta was leading the match at that moment, 18-10. However, the Fever fought back, preventing a massive lead for their opponents. Natasha Howard’s 26 points and 12-out-of-17 shooting helped Indiana get their revenge, an 81-76 win after narrowly losing to the Dream last Tuesday. Meanwhile, Caitlin Clark contributed 11 points and six assists.

Rhyne Howard had the most points for the Dream with 24 points, followed by Brionna Jones’ 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Caitlin Clark is now involved in two high-stakes disputes in the season’s first three games. Last Saturday, she and Angel Reese seemingly escalated their rivalry after contending for the loose ball. While both players had moved on from the situation, it caused backlash, particularly due to hateful remarks aimed towards Reese during that moment.

The Fever, now 2-1 at the East, will welcome last season’s New York Liberty for another much-anticipated match on Saturday.

Caitlin Clark honors veteran teammate’s milestone

Before the Fever’s match against Atlanta, Caitlin Clark took a moment to honor her veteran teammate, DeWanna Bonner. Clark gave her message amidst the Dream’s special message during Thursday’s game, named: “Pay Some Respect to Women’s Sports,” placed at their court.

When IndyStar’s Chloe Peterson asked Clark which player she would give her respects to, she immediately named Bonner, who became the third-highest player on the WNBA’s all-time leading scorer on Saturday.

“Honestly, (DeWanna Bonner) moving into third all-time, I don’t see people talking about that enough,” Clark said.

“I don’t think people realize how big of a deal that is. It’s hard to believe that Tina Charles and (Diana Taurasi) are the only two people in front of her. Two people who have also given a lot to the game.”

Phoenix Mercury guard Diana Taurasi (3) embraces Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) before tipoff on June 30, 2024, at Footprint Center in Phoenix.

Diana Taurasi, who retired last season, leads the scoring list with 10,646 points. Connecticut Sun’s Tina Charles takes second with 7,739.

Averaging 14.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.3 assists throughout 16 seasons, mainly with Pheonix, Bonner remains a key figure in helping rising stars like Caitlin Clark develop into a superstar in the league.
