For the first time in weeks, Teaira McCowan got meaningful minutes to make her mark — and she didn’t waste them. The 6-foot-7 center recorded a season-best 12 points and 13 rebounds in just 17 minutes off the bench during Sunday’s 106–80 loss to the Las Vegas Aces. It was her most impactful performance of the 2025 WNBA season and a reminder of the interior dominance she’s capable of when given the opportunity.
“I’m pretty proud of myself,” McCowan said. “It’s what I do — it’s what I’ve been doing my whole entire career. So I just went out there and showcased it today.”
McCowan had played just seven minutes total over the previous two games, but with the Wings short-handed and struggling to defend the paint, she became a much-needed presence. She scored six of her 12 points in the third quarter and secured six rebounds in that frame alone, helping Dallas briefly narrow the gap after halftime.
“She was ready when her number was called,” Wings head coach Chris Koclanes said. “We were struggling on the boards, and she came in and helped with that. Got to the line, battled. But we’ve got to finish through contact — can’t rely on the whistle.”
McCowan finished 6-of-8 from the free throw line and added two assists and a steal in what Koclanes described as a physical, tone-setting effort. While the team ultimately couldn’t keep pace with Las Vegas’ firepower — five Aces scored in double figures, led by Jackie Young’s 24 — McCowan’s performance stood out as a potential catalyst for rotation adjustments.
“It’s kind of the game plan,” McCowan said of the paint attack. “We wanted to really attack the paint, take advantage of their bigs, and try to get them in foul trouble as best we could.”
She also pointed to a lack of defensive urgency and focus as a key issue, emphasizing that the team needs to bring more intensity and awareness on that end of the floor.
“Defensively, we just need to have more of a sense of urgency,” McCowan said. “I think we did pretty well on A’ja [Wilson], but we could’ve been better — playing in space, crowding her more.”
Wilson finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists, two steals, and four blocks after scoring 40 in the last matchup. Teaira McCowan credited team adjustments but stressed the need for more consistency.
“There were times guards could have dug down,” McCowan said. “We’ve just got to get back in the lab and work on it.”
Off the court, McCowan has embraced her role as a veteran voice in the Wings’ locker room. Now in her third season with Dallas, she says her focus is on helping this young group grow.
“I just try to use my experience and speak up when I can, lead by example,” McCowan said. “I’ve been here since 2022 and want to help this group grow every way I can.”
With the Wings managing injuries and navigating one of the toughest stretches of their schedule, McCowan’s timing couldn’t be better. Sunday’s performance may offer a spark and a reminder of what she brings when fully utilized in the frontcourt rotation.
Dallas (7–19) returns to the floor Monday night against the New York Liberty. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. CT on ESPN.
