The careers of Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark have been inextricably linked for over 25 months now. The former college basketball superstars have both taken the league by storm and are responsible for legions of new fans watching the WNBA. However, their rivalry on the basketball side has always seemed to be a bit forced. Not only are they two unequal talents, they don’t play the same position.
Caitlin Clark is quite obviously the most talented and skilled prospect to ever touch the WNBA floor. Angel Reese undoubtedly has her merits as a defender and as a rebounder. But her skill level doesn’t come close to that of the best forwards in the league, like A’ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier, DeWanna Bonner and more. Reese arguably wasn’t even better than someone like Alysha Clark.
Their rivalry was something that appeared because the whole of college basketball fandom had their eyes on Clark’s ascendancy. People were looking to look the other way on the relatively poor sportsmanship that Reese has consistently displayed. But her recent reaction after getting an intentional foul from Clark signaled a deeper disdain within Reese. Perhaps the Sky forward doesn’t really feel indifferent to her rival.
Jeff Teague and his co-panelists on the 520 podcast got together on Monday morning to discuss this incident. Teague was unabashed in his critique of Angel Reese for the way she escalated the situation. He also spelled out to fans that Reese had ‘flopped’ on the play before directing her ire at Caitlin Clark.
WNBA fans, y’all are gonna have to get used to this new NBA Twitter s**t. We don’t do that soft s**t that y’all like…I’mma keep it gangsta here, she flopped. I like Angel Reese, but that’s a flop…I hate when people do the extra…If you’re being real, what does Angel Reese get that Caitlin Clark doesn’t get? Why would she hate her?

It is clear that the steam is running out of the forced rivalry between Clark and Reese. Since Reese did the ‘ring me’ gesture while accosting Clark in the closing moments of the national championship final, she has had a 5-1 record against the Iowa superstar. Reese would need to do more winning to justify being propped up as a rival of Clark.
One aspect that does have to be considered in this rivalry is how lopsided the talent distribution is. The Indiana Fever have far and away a lot more talent in their ranks at every position. While Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso are undoubtedly good prospects, they are not a good defensive duo together. Their inability to work together has presented easy opportunities to their opponents through the 2024 season.
The Chicago Sky needs to frame a better situation for its frontcourt players while also beefing up at other roster spots. While Courtney Vandersloot is a valuable veteran, the Saturday game proved that she is no longer a viable starter. The Sky would probably have to feature Hailey van Lith as the starting guard at the 1 spot soon enough.
Meanwhile, the Indiana Fever have been projected to have a better roster than every WNBA team not named Aces, Liberty or Lynx. With Bonner, Howard, Kelsey Mitchell, Aliyah Boston and Clark, they have the only team with five All-Star starters. The expectation from this roster is to compete and win championships. It has the right mix of veteran leadership and youthful exuberance to get the job done. They will go as far as Clark leads them.
