The 2025 WNBA Draft Lottery was conducted this past weekend which determined the draft order. The Las Vegas Aces’ options are limited due to league infractions, but every draft is a key to a team’s success.
The Aces recent success was built through previous drafts. The franchise experienced extreme luck by winning the lottery three straight years from 2017-2019. In those drafts, the Aces had the number one pick and selected guard Kelsey Plum, center A’ja Wilson, and guard Jackie Young.
Last season, the Aces did not have a first-round pick but selected two players that have the skills to be significant contributors. Former Iowa guard Kate Martin earned playing time last year as a rookie. In her first career start on June 9th, she recorded 13 points, four rebounds, and three assists, going 5-for-7 on field goal attempts and 3-for-3 on three-pointers. The Aces are also looking forward to talented 6’6 center Elizabeth Kitley who is a three-time ACC player of the year from her time at Virginia Tech. Kitley was out last season recovering from an ACL injury.
The Aces do not have a first-round pick in the 2025 draft due to violating league rules regarding impermissible player benefits.
The Aces will rely on their scouting to find another skilled player to add to their roster depth. The Aces have some veterans who could still re-sign with the team, but the most important free agent the Aces have at the moment is Plum. If the team and Plum can’t work out the right deal to bring her back, the Aces will need to lean on their late-round picks.
