Sabrina Ionescu has been rewriting the record books since entering the WNBA in 2020. Drafted first overall by the New York Liberty, she brought with her a historic college résumé—becoming the first Division I player to record over 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, and 1,000 assists. Since then, she’s developed into one of the league’s most complete guards and a driving force behind New York’s rise into a WNBA title contender.

Now in her sixth season, Ionescu continues to lead the Liberty in their quest to defend their 2024 championship. New York sits second in the league standings and is chasing its 18th win of the season heading into Sunday night’s road matchup against the Connecticut Sun. As the Liberty continue to push toward the postseason, Ionescu remains their engine on offense—and on Sunday, she added yet another milestone to her growing list of achievements.

During Sunday’s game, Ionescu became the fastest player since 2003 to reach 1,000 career assists in the WNBA, reaching this feat in 170 games. The new milestone continues to echo both her playmaking excellence and consistency in the WNBA.

Only Teresa Weatherspoon, in 135 games, achieved the mark quicker prior to 2003; since then, no player has reached the milestone in fewer games than Ionescu.

The record adds to her reputation as one of the league’s best distributors. So far this season, Ionescu is averaging 5.7 assists per game this season and ranks just behind Chicago Sky veteran guard Courtney Vandersloot on the WNBA’s all-time assists-per-game leaderboard (via StatMuse).

The Liberty will hope to finish the regular season strong as they continue their quest for a consecutive titles.
