Sophie Cunningham had a cryptic glance following a Wednesday team huddle. The Indiana Fever veteran’s gimmick, while seemingly normal, might be connected to the recently resolved issue around their former player, DeWanna Bonner, who was waived off the team due to problems.
Sophie Cunningham’s remark was captured in a picture posted by the Fever’s Instagram account. While her other teammates were huddling, she looked up, widely grinning. The 28-year-old Missouri native then commented, “little do yall know” hinting at the heated situation surrounding the team.
What do we not know, @sophaller?

The events refer to Bonner’s abrupt end with the Fever, which started on June 13 when the team had put her on the injury report for “personal reasons” without a clear explanation from both sides. She then hadn’t played for five consecutive games since. On Tuesday, a report from Annie Costabile escalated rumors of the veteran guard being “not fit” with the Fever, and the next day, she parted ways with the team in exchange for Aari McDonald, who once played with Indiana via emergency contract.
While Sophie Cunningham might just be messing around, her usual role as the Fever’s moral anchor, fans could wonder if Bonner didn’t truly fit with the team’s youthful vibes and on-court dynamics. In reference, the two-time WNBA champion had career lows with the team this season. Meanwhile, McDonald had an impressive stint in her temporary stint with the Fever, and she also became a fan, and possibly the team’s, favorite.
Sophie Cunningham and the Indiana Fever had a brutal loss against the Los Angeles Sparks on Thursday night. Brutal, not just because the Fever played without their star Caitlin Clark due to a groin injury, but since they handed the Sparks the victory by collapsing in the fourth quarter.
Speaking in the post-game interview with the newly re-signed Aari McDonald, Sophie Cunningham shared her frustration with her team’s failure to secure their lead in the game. They were leading by ten by the start of the fourth but were outscored, 35-17, by the Sparks.
“Man, I think we’re trying to figure it out. You’re right, we’ve had double-digit leads going into the fourth, and then we just let it slip… We have to have better energy, better focus. It’s all about consistency. We’re trying to give each other grace and patience, but at some point, you got to dig in and say enough is enough.,” Sophie Cunningham said [0:10 mark].
Thursday’s match wasn’t the first for Sophie Cunningham and the Fever to collapse in their games’ final stages. However, such issues are dangerous for their season hopes if they don’t resolve them immediately.
