Lynx's Collier trails only Caitlin Clark in early WNBA All-Star fan voting

Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier has received the second-most fan votes for the WNBA All-Star game of any player, according to the early returns the league revealed on Friday. With close to 485K votes, she's roughly 31K behind ultra-popular Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark.

Collier is the WNBA's leading scorer with 24.4 points per game in her 11 contests. That number fell slightly after she scored a season-low seven points in Tuesday's win over the Las Vegas Aces, a game Collier left early in the third quarter with a back injury. The early favorite to win MVP this year, she also ranks in the top six league-wide in rebounds, steals, and blocks per game for the 11-1 Lynx.

Clark was an instant superstar last year as a rookie, finishing fourth in MVP voting behind A'ja Wilson, Collier, and Breanna Stewart. She's missed five games but has put up strong numbers (19.9 points, 8.7 assists, and 5.7 rebounds) when healthy. Those numbers are very similar to the ones she recorded last season. Clark is shooting 34.5 percent from three in the WNBA, but her ability to make deep triples has made her a viral sensation dating back to her career at the University of Iowa.

Clark's teammate Aliyah Boston, Wilson, Stewart, and rookie Paige Bueckers are the other players who have received at least 300,000 votes so far.

The Fever have four players in the top nine in early voting, including role player Lexie Hull (9.1 PPG), and eight in the top 40, which says a lot about their Clark-driven popularity among fans. The only other Lynx player in the top 40 is Kayla McBride, who is exactly 40th with just over 44K votes.

Fan voting makes up 50 percent of the process to determine the WNBA All-Star Game starters, with voting from players and media making up another 25 percent apiece. The league's head coaches will then vote to determine the reserves, which is how McBride was selected last year. The top two players in fan voting — currently Clark and Collier — will get to draft their teams.

This year's game will be held on July 19 in Indianapolis.

Collier injury update

After sitting out the rest of Tuesday's game with a back injury, Collier's status for Saturday night's game against the Los Angeles Sparks is in some question. Here's what head coach Cheryl Reeve had to say about her star's status on Friday.

"We're in a space of trying to get the information out of there. We just passed 48 hours not too long ago, and that's kind of the time where go 'OK, let's see where it's at now.'

"For many years now, she's had a bulging disc," Reeve continued. "It's not any worse, it's not any better type of thing, it's just what she deals with. When you step a certain way with that, it just gets (Reeve makes clicking noise)."
