Marina Mabrey Discusses Dara Mabrey’s Opportunity With Toronto Tempo

For those unfamiliar, a training camp contract can be converted into a rookie-scale deal if the team decides to keep her, or she could be released.

This will be Dara Mabrey’s first WNBA opportunity after a five-year college career at Virginia Tech and Notre Dame, where she averaged 10.9 points and shot 38% from three, and she now appears fully recovered from the ACL injury she suffered in her final season.

Most recently, Dara Mabrey played in Australia’s NBL1, averaging 20.8 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 2.0 steals. Before that, she had a stint in Greece with PAOK Thessaloniki, where she averaged 17.6 points and 3.9 assists over 21 games.

With that form, her brother has been teasing that Dara might even “cook” her older sister Marina Mabrey when they’re both in Toronto Tempo.

Marina Mabrey, Michaela Mabrey, Roy Jr., and Dara Mabrey all played Division I basketball at Notre Dame and stood out, becoming the program’s first trio of sisters. But the youngest of the five siblings, Ryan Mabrey, has now added a bit of rivalry between them.

“About to cook Marina all training camp,” Ryan wrote under Toronto Tempo’s announcement following Dara Mabrey’s signing with the team.

The comment clearly stirred things up, especially since Marina is the more established player, having played for four WNBA teams and averaging 12.5 points and 3.2 assists in her career.

Still, it’s classic brother-sister banter. But let’s not overlook the fact that Dara Mabrey has a real shot at breaking into the WNBA with this opportunity, and if she makes the most of it, she could earn a lasting place in the league.
