The incident involving Caitlin Clark and Alyssa Thomas remains a much-talked-about topic in sports circles. Many have shared their takes about it, including Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White. Nate Tibbetts has also chimed in, and he defended her star forward.
The Phoenix Mercury head coach stressed that Thomas does not play dirty. He added that he found White’s previous comments about the six-time All-Star “ridiculous.”
“The one thing, [Thomas] is not cheap,” Tibbetts said on Saturday, via Mundo Deportivo’s Toni Canyameras. “I respect Steph White; I got to know her with USA basketball. I respect her as a coach and a person, and I understand her sticking up for Caitlin in this situation. But to say that we had two cheap shots in that game to me is ridiculous.”
Tibbetts also expressed displeasure with the WNBA’s decision to suspend Thomas for one game.
“I’m disappointed with the suspension process by our league and our leaders in the W,” Tibbetts said. “This was not a thorough investigation, in my opinion. The people involved were not questioned at all.”

During her postgame presser following Thursday’s loss to the Mercury, White opened up about the incident when Thomas’ fist made contact with Clark’s throat area.
“We have a generational talent and a WNBA superstar who had two cheap shots right there that weren’t called,” White said. “And I just say again, absolutely unacceptable.”
Thomas served her suspension on Saturday during the Mercury’s 89-80 win over the Toronto Tempo. Clark, on the other hand, was ruled out of the matchup versus the Los Angeles Sparks due to a back injury.
