Mercury hope to bounce back against Washington Mystics

WASHINGTON — The Phoenix Mercury aim to snap a three-game losing streak when they visit the nation’s capital to face the Washington Mystics on Sunday.

Phoenix Preview

Phoenix dropped its first game of the road trip against the New York Liberty, 89-76, on July 25. After a dominant first-quarter showing, the Mercury couldn’t carry momentum over to the second half against the Liberty. An 18-5 run in the third quarter kept New York on top for the rest of the game.

The Mercury’s Alyssa Thomas led the scoring with 20 points and eight assists.

Phoenix is now 15-9 and in second place in the Western Conference.

Washington Preview

The Mystics had a comeback win against the Seattle Storm, 69-58, on July 26. Washington trailed by 15 points in the third quarter, going scoreless in the first five minutes. However, Kiki Iriafen’s free throw and layup started a rally for the Mystics in the fourth quarter. Brittney Sykes had two driving layups to keep Washington on top with less than one minute in the game.

Shakira Austin led the scoring for Washington with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

The Mystics are now 12-12 and fourth in the Eastern Conference.

Last Encounter

The last time both teams faced off was on May 25. The Mercury defeated the Mystics, 68-62, in Phoenix.
