Mercury’s Sug Sutton makes history despite 10th consecutive loss

The Phoenix Mercury tied a franchise record dating back to 2012 as they picked up their 10th consecutive loss tonight against the 1st-place Las Vegas Aces.

While the Mercury managed to tie the score at 20 by the end of the first quarter, the jump shot from Britney Griner at the buzzer marked one of the few positive moments of the evening.

The other positive moment came later in the game when the Mercury’s Sug Sutton became the first player in franchise history to record a triple-double.

Sutton ended the night with 18 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists.

Unfortunately, in the second quarter, the Mercury shot 4-14 from the field, which allowed the Aces to take a commanding 48-31 lead heading into the half. Las Vegas went on a 21-6 run to end Q2, giving them momentum that would eventually continue for the rest of the game.

A’Ja Wilson led the scoring onslaught for the Aces. The former 1st-round pick put up 30 points on just 17 attempts and also grabbed nine rebounds. Wilson is now, with one game remaining in the regular season, 35 points away from breaking the WNBA single-season scoring record.

Chelsea Gray and Jackie Young also had themselves a tremendous night, with both players shooting over 50%, scoring at least 15 points, and securing five rebounds each.

The Phoenix Mercury will now wrap up a season to forget this Sunday, once again against the Las Vegas Aces. Tipoff is set for 12:00 PM.
