Mercury’s Wednesday night game against Sparks is a must-win
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

What do the Phoenix Mercury’s playoff chances look like going into Wednesday night’s game against the No. 8 seed Los Angeles Sparks? As of now, the Mercury sit at the No.11 seed in the league with a record of 9-23.

The Mercury are on a three-game losing streak ahead of Wednesday’s matchup and will need to start picking up the pace if they have any hopes of taking their season past Sept. 10.

Unfortunately for the Mercury, their final eight games are all against teams who currently hold playoff positions – five of which are against top five seeded teams. The Mercury’s final two games of the season are against the No.1 seeded Las Vegas Aces who hold a record of 29-4.

Currently four games behind the No. 8 seeded Sparks, tonight’s win would give the team a huge push in playoff chances.

The Sparks are on a four-game winning streak going into Wednesday night’s game in their home arena. The team is coming off of a win against the No.1 seeded Aces on Saturday, in a 78-72 defeat.

Phoenix has won only one game on the road this season, with their other eight wins taking place at Footprint Center. Wednesday’s battle against the hot-streaked Sparks while on the road is going to be challenging for the Mercury but is a must-win scenario for the team.

A win would certainly bump the Mercury into the No.10 seed in front of Seattle and create a much tighter race between the No. 8 through No. 12 seeds.
