Monique Billings sat out the Indiana Fever’s first game of the new WNBA season due to injury.
After starting all three preseason games for head coach Stephanie White, the 6-foot-4 forward was ruled out of the opener against the Dallas Wings on Saturday. This was after Billings sustained an ankle injury in Indiana’s final preseason game against the Nigeria Women’s National Team.
Billings was a limited participant in practice during the buildup to the Wings game. This has been the case again for the 30-year-old this week as Indiana prepares for their matchup against the Los Angeles Sparks on Wednesday.
The good news, however, is that Billings is closing in on her return. In fact, the former UCLA Bruins standout herself expressed her excitement to make her regular-season debut in her latest injury update.
“I feel healthy, ready to go, and to be out there with my team,” Billings said in practice on Tuesday, via Chloe Peterson of the Indianapolis Star.
As of writing, the Fever have not confirmed Billings’ status for Wednesday’s game against the Sparks. However, based on her update here, it is clear that the veteran is raring to go.
Billings is projected to be part of Coach White’s starting five, where she will slot in alongside Aliyah Boston in the frontcourt. It was fellow free agent recruit Myisha Hines-Allen who got the start against Dallas with Billings sitting out.
The Fever lost their opener to the Wings, 107-104. They will be looking to bounce back against the 0-1 Sparks on Wednesday, and Billings’ potential return should provide a significant boost.
UPDATE: Billings is officially off the injury report for Wednesday's game. She is set to make her debut against the Sparks.
