Th Unrivaled League, founded by WNBA stars Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier, has been a success in its inaugural season.
The first game was played on January 17 and the finals are set for March 17.
On Feb. 10-14, the Unrivaled League had a unique 1-on-1 tournament that ended with Collier defeating Aaliyah Edwards in the final.
Collier, the Minnesota Lynx star, earned $200,000 for winning the tournament while Edwards, who plays in the WNBA for the Washington Mystics, won $50,000.
In a cool gesture, Collier is giving $100,000 of her prize money to the staff of her Unrivaled team, the Lunar Owls, as Kendra Andrews of ESPN reported.
"Unrivaled co-founder and player Napheesa Collier is giving $100,000 -- half of her prize money for winning the league's first one-on-one tournament -- to her training and performance staff and assistant coaches working with her team, the Lunar Owls, sources told ESPN on Friday."
Collier's WNBA salary is reportedly $214,000. After she won the 1-on-1 tournament, she spoke about the prize money, per Alanis Thames.
“My entire WNBA salary is what I just got in 30 minutes of playing 1-on-1,” Collier said. “Which is insane to even say. And same for (playing) overseas. A lot of people, this is their full contract, so you’re playing seven months for this kind of money.”
The Unrivaled League took a few days off after the 1-on-1 tournament and returned to action on Tuesday.
