Natasha Cloud, Kahleah Copper continue breaking WNBA records with Mercury
Patrick Breen/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Phoenix Mercury may have fallen to the Dallas Wings 107-92, but Saturday night was historic as two players achieved milestones.

Kahleah Copper scored her 3,000th point of her career to be 84th all-time in WNBA scoring history, and Natasha Cloud moved up to 19th all-time in assists.

With 55.7 seconds left in the third quarter, Copper crossed the 3,000-point plateau with a three-pointer. Going in with 2,977, she finished with 3,009 points and passed former Mercury Marie Ferdinand-Harris (3,001).

Already making a name for herself in the Valley, Copper is the second-highest scorer in the WNBA thus far with 29.2 points per game. Wings star Arike Ogunbowale (31.0) leads the league in points after scoring 40 against the Mercury.

As for Cloud, she overtook Mercury associate head coach Kristi Toliver on the assist leaderboard with 1,302. With the Washington Mystics last season, Toliver reached 1,300 career assists last season before taking her current role in Phoenix, though she hasn’t officially announced her retirement from playing.

Not only that, but Cloud is the assist leader in the WNBA this season with 8.8 per game. The next closest player is the Connecticut Sun’s Alyssa Thomas (7.8) in second.

The Pennsylvania-born duo of Cloud and Copper have done wonders since joining the Mercury, shattering records just five games into this season.

Last week, Copper became the first player in WNBA history to have back-to-back 37-plus point games and Cloud recorded her 11th point/assist double-double in her career which is the eighth most in WNBA history.

Phoenix is looking to make noise this season after a 9-31 season and with the free-agent signing of Cloud and the blockbuster trade for Copper, there are plenty more games in which these two will take over and establish their names in the history books.
