The New York Liberty are the most valuable team in the WNBA, worth nearly half a billion dollars based on a recent valuation.

The Liberty, also the reigning league champions, didn't just make history in women's basketball Thursday -- the franchise made history across the entire landscape of women's sports.

"BREAKING: The New York Liberty have raised capital from a group of investors in a deal that values the franchise at $450 million, sources tell The Athletic," The Athletic's official X account posted on the morning of Thursday, May 22. "It's the largest valuation ever for a pro women's sports team."

The news comes after the New York franchise made the aforementioned agreement in the interest of constructing a new practice facility.

Ben Pickman explained the valuation in more detail in his article for The Athletic, a subsidiary of the New York Times.

"The Liberty’s valuation is believed to be a record across professional women’s sports and is more than double that of the last publicly known capital raise made by a WNBA franchise," Pickman wrote

"Last summer, the Dallas Wings sold two half-percent stakes in the franchise at a $208 million valuation. Earlier this month, entrepreneur Alexis Ohanian paid $26.5 million for an 8 percent stake in Chelsea Women, which values the team at $326 million."

Pickman continued.

"The Liberty ... said they were building their own 75,000-square-foot practice facility in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn," he wrote.

"Projected to open in 2027, the Liberty’s training center will have two full practice courts, a private suite for each player instead of traditional lockers, a full recovery suite, an in-house hair and makeup studio, and a two-story strength training room, among other features."

The Liberty are currently 1-0 on the season as they attempt to defend their first ever WNBA championship title. They will take the floor for a road game against the Chicago Sky on Thursday night.
