New York Liberty’s Sabrina Ionescu Scheduled for MRI Following Ankle Injury

The New York Liberty took an early blow on Sunday after Sabrina Ionescu suffered an ankle injury during a preseason game. According to the latest report, the Liberty star has yet to get a final verdict on the extent of the injury.

The 2024 NBA champion rolled her ankle while attempting a layup during the preseason game against the Connecticut Sun. According to The Athletic’s Annie Costabile, first-year Liberty coach Chris DeMarco confirmed that Ionescu had rolled her ankle and that she would get an MRI on Monday.

With over seven minutes remaining in the third quarter, Ionescu drove to the basket. While attempting the layup, she landed awkwardly on Sun’s forward, Diamond Miller’s feet, and rolled her left ankle. After the game, Ionescu was seen ‌walking with a boot on her left leg.

Before exiting the game, Ionescu played 16 minutes and scored 6 points on 2-of-8 shooting from the field. The Liberty won their second preseason game 79-67, following a 109-91 loss to the Indiana Fever on April 25.

“[Things are] positive right now,” DeMarco said postgame. “We’re just going to do the test tomorrow, and that’s the only update I have.”

At first, the injury didn’t look that serious. Ionescu was able to walk to the locker room without any help, albeit with a limp.

Sabrina Ionescu’s teammates react to her injury

This is not the first time that Ionescu has injured her left ankle, and it might end up jeopardizing the Liberty’s season. In her rookie season, Ionescu injured the same ankle and couldn’t continue playing that season after undergoing surgery. New York can only hope it isn’t as serious this time around.

After the game, Ionsecu’s teammates, Jonquel Jones and Breanna Stewart, spoke about their teammate’s injury. Stewart supported her teammate and said that Ionescu wasn’t much worried about the injury.

“Sab is a tough cookie,” the two-time WNBA MVP said after the game. “She’s gonna get it checked out, but she seems in good spirits.”

Meanwhile, Jones had a more cautionary stance about the incident. “It wasn’t good to see,” Jones said (va AP). “I was able to check in with our PT and stuff during the game to make sure she was okay. Our fingers are crossed, obviously, until we get more information.”

The New York Liberty didn’t have a great 2025 season, and injuries played a big part in derailing its campaign. Jones and Stewart missed 13 regular-season games each with ankle and knee injuries. Ionescu had also missed six games with toe and neck injuries, while the team’s former Center Nyara Sabally was limited to just 17 games with a knee injury.
